Dave Cormier is an educational activist, researcher, online community advocate and the Project Lead for Student Relations Management at the

University of Prince Edward Island. He has published on open education, Rhizomatic Learning, MOOCs (Massive\Open Online Courses),

Digital Identity.

As Manager of Domestic Recruitment, First-Year advising and first-year success and Project Lead for Student Relations his role is to survey the

relationship between the university and the student and improve it where possible. In addition to managing the recruitment and First-year

advisement office he is involved in a number of projects designed to help students transition from high school to university.

His educational journey started in 1998 teaching little children to speak English. The pivotal moment of his career happened when he was

teaching at Hannam University in South Korea in 2003 surrounded by the papers of 275 writing students and wondering if he had them all. That

winter he started using discussion forums to bring all of his students together in a writing community (and to digitally keep track of their work)

and he hasn’t looked back. He’s since helped organize online communities of teachers, spoken at events around the world and worked to

understand how internet changes what it means to know. His educational exploration partners have included faculty and researchers from well-

known universities, and lone teachers in small town classrooms. Some of them are even still talking to him.

Dave’s keynotes in the last couple of years have centred around how coming to know is a messy, imprecise process at once intensely individual

A biography is a story about a famous person’s life.  Usually biographies are written about someone who has overcome tremendous struggles

before he or she was successful or someone who has made a major contribution to our world. For the Biography Report, you will represent a

character from a biography book in a live performance. The questions on the book report form will help you “be” the character. Here’s a timeline

to help you get started:

• Before April 25th: Choose a biography about an American whose life means something to you and has done something to secure or

advance freedom.  A list of people whose biographies you may want to choose from is attached.  Make sure you choose a book that is

appropriate to your reading level.  Your teacher can help you. Have your teacher approve your book. You may supplement the information you

get from your book by using internet sources. Make sure you add these sources to the bibliography.

• April 28th: Begin to read the book and fill in the Book Report worksheet; it will help you with your presentation. Different sections may

be due as homework during May. Check with your teacher.

• May 17th: Submit your packet, along with the bibliography, to your teacher for final review.

• May 19-23rd: Write your speech on index cards. Remember to use the word “I” (first person), when you are writing your notes.

Practice a 2-3 minute oral presentation.

• By May 27th: Find a piece of clothing and find, make, or draw a prop or artifact (no weapons of any type, please) to represent your

person or the time period he or she lived.

• May 29th: Bring your artifact to school for a rehearsal. We’ll invite the 2nd grade so you’ll have to be prepared.

• May 30th: Dress as your character, bring the prop to school, and represent your character in the Wax Museum. Invite your parents to

come and bring a camera.
