This is absolutely KUH-razy! I haven’t been this excited since that Doritos chip bag AR app. If you watch the video above and aren’t even the least bit impressed with the Google Goggles apps for Android then you either a) already saw this video before the holidays (shhh, don’t tell anyone I’m late posting it!), or b) have travelled back in time from the future and this super-cool technology is no longer totally mind blowing (what?!). On a related note, I was reading a “Trendwatching article”:http://trendwatching.com/briefing/ that named “Real Time Reviews” as one of the top 10 trends for 2010, stating that “with even more people sharing, in real time, everything they do, buy, listen to, watch, attend, wear and so on, and with even more search engines and tracking services making it easy to find and group these ‘live dispatches’ by theme, topic or brand, this year will see ready-to-buy consumers tapping into a live stream of (first-hand) experiences from fellow consumers.” When you take into consideration the capabilities of a visual search app like Google Goggles, this process could be accelerated to the point where even if we don’t know what the heck the product is, who makes it, how much it costs, or where to buy, we could simply snap a photo of it and all the information, including live reviews, would be right there on our phone! OK, now stay with me here, and lets take this idea even further: imagine if we were able to layer this technology with social networks that included lots of image-based content (Facebook, Flickr, etc.) and simply taking a photo of a person’s face could pull up any data that’s floating around in cyberspace about that person – BAM! POW! Did that just blow your mind or what?! The possibilities are endless! I can’t wait to see how this technology is going to be leveraged by marketers.

I’ve been watching reports about Google’s new Android operating system for mobile phones carefully the last couple of weeks. Developers are reportedly having some bigger problems developing for Android than the iPhone, because of big differences in the mobile phone hardware and settings used to run Android. The iPhone has something like 100,000 apps now available, and I read a prediction yesterday in the New York Times that number may TRIPLE in 2010. With such an astonishing lead in the sheer number of available applications, why would anyone want a phone OTHER than an iPhone today? Is there any way another mobile phone platform can catch up? If any company can pull this off, Google should be able to.

This evening I learned about Google Goggles, and I’m wondering if and how this functionality will come to the iPhone? The service is billed as a way to “Use pictures to search the web.” It sounds like a is available ONLY for Android, not for iPhone. According to Engadget’s article today, Google Goggles is:

…an Android app that takes photos, tries to recognize what in them, and then generates search results about them. Goggles can recognize landmarks, books, contact info, artwork, places, wine, and logos at the moment, and Google says it’s working on adding other types of objects, like plants.
This video gives a 2 minute summary of Google Goggles:

A few weeks ago, Marketing Magazine held a conference specifically about Content Marketing. We’ve all heard the term, but what does it mean? ‘Content Marketing’ is creating a piece of shareable content in any format, which is focused not on selling, but rather on communicating with customers. This is a shift in the traditional marketing paradigm, as brand communications are no longer just about barfing out your key brand messages.

With Content Marketing, the metrics around successful campaigns are no longer about sales targets, but ‘Share of Heart’. Consumers are no longer voting on brands with their wallets, but with their time. That is a difficult concept for brands to accept, but in the current media landscape where we are inundated with brand messaging at every turn, where we choose to spend our time.

Another interesting concept that came out of this conference is that brands need to expand who they consider to be their competition. Competitors are no longer just other brick and mortars who sell the same inventory, but also publishing partners and media outlets that are creating content about your category. Your biggest competitor of all, believe it or not, is your customer. They are faster, wittier and extremely reactive. They can produce a meme instantly and they don’t have to go through legal approval. When GAP changed their logo, t-shirts had been printed using the font of the new logo, reading ‘Crap’ within 24 hours.  It’s the speed and creativity of your consumer, and the social media channels that they have access to, that make them your biggest competitor for a potential customer’s time.

Have you embraced Content Marketing yet? If you’re looking to start, make sure what you’re creating is all or most of the following:
